Harry Shortway, Vernon, Sussex County

Harry Shortway, a devoted 32-years resident of Vernon, stands as a pillar of community service and leadership. His extensive lacrosse coaching career includes notable roles such as the head coach for the Vernon Township High School boys’ varsity lacrosse team earning him recognition as the New Jersey Herald Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 2017. He also coached the first women’s lacrosse team at Sussex County Community College, In addition to his coaching accomplishments, Harry’s over two-decade-long career in law enforcement showcases his commitment to public safety, marked by multiple life-saving responses. As a former mayor, deputy mayor, and Council President of Vernon, he has tirelessly advocated for law enforcement, first responders, and environmental causes. Notably, his strategic negotiations with Mountain Creek ski resort demonstrated his ability to address complex issues without imposing additional burdens on taxpayers. Harry Shortway’s exemplary service has garnered well-deserved accolades, including Sussex County Mayor of the Year and multiple recognitions for his contributions to education and public safety.

Matt and Lindsay Shortway
Matt and Lindsay Shortway live in Coastal NC where they own and operate Shortway Brewing Co. They enjoy attending the sporting events and dance recitals of their 3 children as well as family time fishing and kayaking on the river. Matt served 10 years of active duty in the United States Marine Corps including two tours to the Middle East.
Derek and Taylor Shortway
Derek and Taylor Shortway live in Highland Lakes with their two daughters. Taylor works in construction as an assistant project manager and Derek, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, works as a customer success manager for a safety solutions company. Their family enjoys all that Highland Lakes and Vernon have to offer, and like to stay active at the pump track, participating in PAL sports and community events.
Kendahl and Mike
Kendahl, Mike, their toddler, and two rescued dogs live in Greenville, NC. Mike is a lighting specialist and Kendahl is a licensed psychologist and professor at East Carolina University. They enjoy being involved in community events, lots of outdoor activities, and volunteering as lacrosse coaches whenever they can.
Zach
Zach, the proud Vernon native and youngest son of Harry and Cherie, found inspiration in the landscapes of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, where he spent a transformative decade. Returning to his roots in 2019, Zach opened the only yoga studio in Vernon, Ah-ha Yoga. Infused with the principles of empowerment and mindfulness, Zach’s sessions emphasize well-being and a strong sense of community, creating a welcoming space for everyone.

About Family

Harry and Cherie have been married for 42 years. They have lived in Vernon for 32 years, raising their four children on their small farm. All four graduated from Vernon High School and were captains of their respective lacrosse teams.
Two of their children still reside in Vernon, the other two in North Carolina.

Military Family

Derek, the elder son, demonstrated his commitment to service by deploying to Kandahar, Afghanistan, where he served valiantly with the 4th Infantry Division. A distinguished graduate of Air Assault School, Derek earned a Combat Infantry Badge for his exceptional leadership as a weapons squad team leader.

Matt is my oldest son, has a remarkable decade-long service record in the United States Marine Corps. During his tenure, he proudly completed two tours in the Middle East, showcasing his dedication to protecting and serving his country. The wealth of experience gained during his ten years of active duty positions Matt as an individual with an unwavering commitment to duty and a profound understanding of military service.
